Should you be Investing in a Coach or a Mentor?
When I first started out in the online world, I was lucky to have some good friends who were a few steps ahead of me as bloggers. I started out as a fashion, beauty and fitness blogger online, and right from the get-go, I realized I need some serious expert help if I was going to make this happen.
So I joined my fellow blogger friends and attended my first blogger conference. I learned loads about things like finding your niche, establishing a stand-out brand, how to leverage social media to get traffic to your blog, using Pinterest effectively, SEO, etc. Here I am with my bestie and blogger friends! Ever heard of Six Sisters Stuff? Yeah that's two of them :).
The best thing I ever did for myself was to let go of my ego, and accept that I was a beginner at all this, and needed the help of those who had done what I desired. So off to my first blogger conference I went, dropping my first $200 on my new online blog!
Hind sight is 20/20, and one BIG mistake I did at the beginning was spend TOO much time grabbing every freebie in sight, Googling and YouTubing everything I had questions on, watching everyone and their mom on Periscope (at that time, that was where all the big time experts were hanging out) for hours and hours every day. I was filling my tank with knowledge, but not taking even a minute of the day to actually implement all this. I was keeping myself "busy" so that I wouldn't have to actually face the fact that I really didn't have a clue what I was going, even though I had learned so much about so many random subjects.
It's like having all the pieces to a puzzle, but not having any idea, system, or process to how to start and do it without wasting massive amounts of time.
It took me six months too long to realize I was going in circles alone, trying to throw all these pieces together to form my business plan and strategy. I spent months opting in to receive tons of PDFs, reading blogs, joining hundreds of Facebook groups, getting all sorts of “expert” opinions, which at many times contradicted themselves. Sound familiar?
Eventually, I even invested in a coach in the for of group courses, only to realize I was not getting the individualized support needed to build a brand new business. I was getting lost in a sea of unanswered questions and how everything applied to me specifically.
I also realized, how could I expect someone to invest in my consulting or coaching, if I wasn’t willing to get a mentor myself? I realized that energetically, it doesn’t work that way.
How can you ask something of others that you aren't willing to do yourself? I believe in doing things from a place of integrity, and I knew if I wanted to really turn things up a notch and really be successful online, I would need to hire a mentor that was where I desired to be as a coach, and had a laser-focused system to lead me in the right direction instead of all over the place.
I finally decided to do something different than what I had been, and did one of the scariest things I have ever done! I invested THOUSANDS, with no guarantees, or certainty of a positive outcome, aside from my gut feeling knowing that this was the right step.
Fast forward three months, I had clarity on who I could confidently serve, created a stand-out brand unique to me, built and packaged my coaching program, and quit my life-sucking office job and never looked back!
So when is investing in a coach not a good idea?
Now, did the coach do everything for me and make it happen and I just sat back and it all landed on my lap? 110% absolutely not! I took massive action and implemented everything I learned.
If you think that any particular coach has a MAGIC PILL that somehow will make you loads of money, then please do NOT invest in a coach...because you will be disappointed when that coach doesn't magically deliver all your desires like a genie in a bottle. YOU and only YOU are responsible for your success, and if any coach promises to create miracles FOR YOU, without you getting your hands dirty a little (ok, a lot), you honestly should run for the hills!
But when I have invested in a coach or even a program, I showed up consistently, got my questions answered, and didn't make excuses for myself whenever something went wrong or I was confused in any way. And trust me, I came across a lot of questions and blocks in building my business, and could have easily used the excuse that I was just "too busy" with my job, or too tired, or whatever else I was feeling at the time. I am always floored when I see people investing thousands into coaching, to then turn around and waste the support provided by never showing up, not asking questions, etc.
The first high-ticket program where I invested in a coach, I was so committed and two feet in, that I would bring my laptop to my 9-5 in my purse, sneak out during my lunch hour to the nearest Starbucks, and just went to town for an hour before heading back to my desk job. I opted to not go out to lunch with co-workers and as soon as I got home, I would grab some food, and sat down again for another couple hours and plugged away again. I used my time in the shower, getting ready in the morning, and then driving to work to consistently listen to motivational talks, podcasts, audiobooks, etc. Why the heck do I share all this?
Because people say they want the successful business, the hot bod, the loving relationship and significant other, etc. but they are not willing to do the work it takes to actually HAVE THAT! You honestly have to be OBSESSED with your goals and your desires, and go after them like your life depends on it....because many times it actually does.
So what's the bottom line here?
You have to want your desires, more than you want your fears, your excuses, your drama, and quite honestly, your BS that's keeping you stuck!
I am in no way perfect. And there are many days were I wake up and really don't feel like doing squat. But the reason that I have been able to build my business from the ground up, and create the income and impact I have in less than a year, is because I took full advantage of my mentors and coaches, and took charge of my success! No coach can MAKE you do anything you aren't already committed to doing right now!
A mentor will only get you to the next level if you take their hand and take the step yourself! So you really have to ask yourself if you are REALLY ready to take massive action, be teachable, take feedback well, and take responsibility for your own success! Or are you saying to yourself you are just "too busy," "too broke," "someday I'll do it," etc., then, you may want to reconsider if you are meant to be a business owner. Maybe it just sounds like a nice idea to have your own business, but it's not what you truly desire?
Let me be clear, entrepreneurship is NOT for everyone, and it is NOT for the faint of heart.
However, if you ARE ready to make your dreams a reality, NO MATTER WHAT, even if the road is super bumpy and you get a little bruised along the way, then I will say, you do NOT have to drive the bumpy road alone, nor SHOULD you.
No other big success out there did it, so why would you?
If you are not happy with the current results you’ve gotten, and feel burdened, confused, frustrated and clouded on the direction you should take, continuing on this path expecting different results is the definition of insanity. Having a mentor is not weakness, quite the opposite, it’s a sign of a truly strong and empowered QUEEN!
You can choose to change your money story and finally allow yourself to be supported TODAY, not 6 or 12 months from now.
What kind of people invest in a coach and mentors?
The greatest of the greatest in the world have had mentors. The only way that the most successful people in the world have reached their level of success is by investing in mentors who were a few steps ahead of them. This goes for all high performance athletes, coaches, politicians, and million dollar business owners.
But they did NOT invest in mentors AFTER they had all the money and were making their millions and earning their Olympic gold, they invested when they were living in their parent's garage and training at the local community gym.
I invest in mentoring consistently even now. I am always seeking to get to the next level, there is no room for complacency or mediocrity here.
